When I grew up, NY cops would patrol a beat on foot. We saw them, we said hello to them.
Something went awry and they retreated to their cars and over the years became an occupying army.
With many of them living on Long Island, they really had nothing but contempt for those in NYC.
The new Commissioner, O’Neill, seems to be committed to returning cops to foot patrols.
I hope so.
Goodbye, Bratton. You did nothing but add to the sense of alienation between the citizens of New York — who are your employers — and the police force.
