This is just about the halfway point of what has so far been a very disappointing and forgettable second season.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
So it’s all the more shocking that this episode came out of all of that.
Because this was the first episode of the entire series to date that I’d describe as magnificent!
The script had some minor irritations —
— such as that and Scott’s speech at the end —
— and that damn dog of Lady Penelope —
— but, damn!, director McCully just about pulled out all the stops here and it seems there were so many shots in this that you could add up the first five episodes of this season and still not reach the number in this single episode!
After seeing this episode in finished form, as Executive Producer of the series I would have called up McCully and asked if his schedule was clear to do the rest of the season! Just give it to him!
Some overdue credit to the graphic designer in this series:
This is really groundbreaking work, perhaps up there with the original icons for the first Macintosh OS. I don’t know if anyone else is appreciating the level of thinking that went into those designs, so I wanted to note it here. Great work!
And finally, the music by the Fosters was the best ever. The annoying horns were mostly gone and they did some really movie-quality cues. I just wish the sound mixer would give priority to the music over the layers of sound effects.
I hope the second part of this story maintains the quality.
