TV: The Good Doctor

The anti-Gregory House, M.D..

Or so one would be led to believe from the promos that tout “From The Creator Of House.”

I saw maybe two or three brief promos that weren’t very revealing before I saw last night’s premiere.

I’m glad I didn’t bother to get more info. That allowed me to be surprised by the fact this is based on an original drama from South Korea. Is this the first time something from that country’s been adapted for American TV?

I learned the original series ran for twenty episodes.

I also learned that being “from the creator of House” doesn’t mean he also created this.

Anyone interested in a peek at the original series can view an English-subtitled portion:

For full episodes, Hell must be paid. Twice. They’re not only framed to defeat easy discovery by algorithms, they’re further marred by various overlays to defeat video fingerprint scanning — this also obscures the English subtitles.

I’m not clued into the South Korean online drama scene, so I don’t know how easy it would be to get the original series. I don’t know that I’d want to watch both. I tried that with Broadchurch and quickly gave up on the original and the American version. There are only so many hours in a day (and those hours zoom by faster now!).

The American pilot was intriguing but I’m puzzled by where it can go. I’ll watch a few more episodes to see.
