YouTube this week surfaced videos peddling misinformation, hateful messages and conspiracy theories to users tracking major news events—prompting the site to change its search results to promote more authoritative sources.
YouTube has replaced Twitter as my daily timesink.
That’s not a bad thing except that its Search and Recommendation algorithms are embarrassingly bad.
In my Recommendations, I find videos that I already Subscribe to. I don’t need them Recommended! They’re ready to see under the Subscriptions tab.
In addition, the same damn videos are Recommended again and again and again. And then there are the WTF Recommended. They’re so far off-topic that I can’t even begin to imagine the code behind the “reasoning.”
And just what the hell is Search based on? Is it Title? Description? Tags? None of it makes any sense.
And just try to get those search results listed by Date. It can’t be done. They’re never, ever in proper chronological order. Not ever.
YouTube has a far larger problem than surfacing wingnut videos for gullible morons to believe.
It’s way past time for them to fix their entire Search and Recommendation engines.
