The Surprising Arc Board From Singapore

This has been my sentiment since researching electric skateboards instead of electric scooters:

Singapore, which has led the world in coming to terms with personal electric transport, has now surprised the electric skateboard world — and me — with its own homegrown electric skateboard, the Arc Board.

There is no electric scooter that can match that in terms of size, weight, and other specs.

But I doubt electric scooters involve this when trying them:

Even so, most people have learned to ride a bike and to roller skate, so remembering that determination and being patient can lead to success here too for many people.

Here are the specs with the big surprise from Singapore:

Everything else looks great. But that Fast Charge! No one else has that! Singapore leads the world again!

At twenty-two inches, this is the size of a Penny board …

… but this isn’t a DIY kit made from off-the-shelf in-the-marketplace ingredients. Look:

That’s a custom battery pack with logo. And the remote (not pictured) is also custom with a logo.

The battery is also different from most boards: It’s not the typical LiOn. It’s LiFePO4. I wonder if that kind of battery allows this to have the first Fast Charge in the world for an electric skateboard?

And there are two range test videos. The first one here is sped up but includes stat overlay. The second one is unedited and real-time but without the stat overlay (grrr!). But first some screensnaps.

Standing still, the speed is 9kmh. Erm. That kind of thing makes me suspect other speeds but everything looks legit in the second video (after this one):

And surprisingly goes over those storm drains:

Up a bridge that has a brick path:

Speed peaks at 26kmh (maybe 27, very briefly); that’s 16mph:

Being passed by a curious bike rider who doesn’t even seem to be pedaling hard:

On the way back, the speed peaks very briefly at 20kmh (19 shown here); that’s 12mph:

I don’t know if that drop in peak speed was due to battery depletion or a conscious decision of the rider. All the same, it did 18 kilometers — that’s 11 miles. I think that’s damned good for this size of board. To compare a similar board, the Meepo Penny Single with Sanyo battery claims a max range of 10-13km, which is just 6-8 miles. The Meepo top speed is 22kmh, or 13mph, versus 25kmh, or 16mph, for the Arc Board.

When it comes to price, however, the Meepo I’m comparing is US$259.00 (plus probably US$100 or so for shipping) versus about US$660 (plus about $60 shipping).

The Meepo is hub drive. The Arc Board is belt drive.

While everyone says hub drive is the future, my research has shown that belt drive can really put out some damned power. The Boosted Board is a belt drive. The interesting Benchwheel Penny (US$400) is belt drive.

So far, this board seems to be the best one for my personal needs. Does it have everything, though? No.

Here are the detriments:

1) The remote doesn’t show the board’s battery level.

2) The remote can accidentally put you in reverse.

3) To see the board’s battery remaining charge, it must be turned over completely and a button must be pushed.

4) There’s no app for board details or trip logging and total odometer.

None of these would be dealbreakers. But they’re irritating for a board at this price.

Aside from good speed and range, the big plus here is the Fast Charge. Just 40 minutes to hit 80%? Using up 40 minutes of time would be nothing for me. I could do that while waiting for (10-20 minutes) and riding (20-25 minutes) the ferry. And I could easily pop into a public library to Fast Charge. I’d use the many outlets available for people to bring their own devices. Plus, there’s Bryant Park — Jermaine Ellis was shown charging his Boosted Board there. Someone really needs to map out public AC outlets in NYC.

What I also like is its hill climbing ability. It could probably tackle the Death Hills here.

If I had the money at this moment, this is the board I’d buy. But there’s no money yet. So I will continue research. But I doubt there will be anything to change my mind.
