The New York Times: ‘Roseanne’ Canceled by ABC Hours After Racist Tweet by Roseanne Barr [Firefox users can bypass the paywall, if needed, by hitting Reader View]
ABC canceled the hit sitcom “Roseanne” on Tuesday hours after the show’s star and co-creator, Roseanne Barr, posted a racist tweet about a former top adviser to President Barack Obama.
Early on Tuesday, Ms. Barr posted a comment about Valerie Jarrett, an African-American woman who was a senior adviser to Mr. Obama throughout his presidency and considered one of his most influential aides, that said if “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”
Hours later, ABC canceled Ms. Barr’s show, which had ended its successful comeback season last week and was expected to return in the fall for 13 episodes.
I read an article about her tweet nearly first thing this morning. It was … unusual.
And now her show has been given the ax!
This is what Twitter can do to someone. I’ve seen it over and over. A quick lapse in judgment and the mob comes after you. Sometimes, it’s a tweet being taken out of context and being used for foul ends (see some of that here; although I’ve since deleted all of my tweets, so the embeds no longer work).
That’s another reason to get the hell off Twitter. It’s become a suicide machine, where people wind up unintentionally killing their careers. Roseanne is the latest casualty. She won’t be the last.
And even though all my tweets are gone, I know they exist Out There. And some day I will have to go through the boring chore of defending or renouncing past tweets.
