I didn’t do a post for last weekend. Just suffice it to say that I’m seeing more electric scooters in Manhattan. I might have seen a Swagtron Swagger 5. I definitely saw two Ninebot/Segway KickScooter ES models, one a verified ES1.
Reading was: Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man’s First Journey to the Moon by Robert Kurson.
This is one hell of a book. 1968, America was going out of its head. We had two assassinations, the brutal protest in Chicago, and so much more. NASA, meanwhile, was feeling pressure from Soviet Russia. The Soviets were going to get to the Moon first. America couldn’t let that happen. NASA wouldn’t let that happen. Against tremendous odds — and they were tremendous — NASA decided to violate its own protocols and send Apollo 8 into Moon orbit. This is not just a story about NASA, the astronauts, America, and the Space Race, it also includes the wives of the astronauts. They were some unique women! They too had the Right Stuff. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It’s written with the drama and pacing of a movie. You won’t want to stop reading. Get it!
