October 2018 Apple Event

The loud cheers weren’t typical of an Apple Event. Just how many Apple employees were filling seats?

How I miss Steve Jobs.

So does Apple!

The event, in brief, in terms of iPad:

And there’s USB-C. Connecting “data devices” was mentioned but only displays were shown in illustrations. Apple’s new iPad Pro page mentions only displays and cameras. No using external drives (yet?).

No new iPad Mini. It’s alive, paired with the iPad 2018 as devices for “the rest of us” (as Apple once said and believed … cough). Unless Apple does a stealth spec bump, we’ll probably have to wait until Spring 2019 for a new model. Well, at least it’s not dead!

Next week I’ll probably be doing the final Google Books — and other — PDF tests I’ll ever need to do.

  1. I don’t think we are going to see any more iPad minis. For some reason, Apple has decided that form factor is no longer relevant.
I would love to have a fast 8″ tablet for reading ebooks, browsing, watching videos etc. The Amazon Fire HD 8 that I currently own slows down frequently, the volume is poor and the screen is ..well..ugh. I see folks on the train and buses with these huge iPad pros and it’s just fucking ridiculous.

You want an iPad Mini. If Best Buy drops the price to $299, buy. Or take the gamble and buy Chinese: Teclast M89.

      • I’m not buying a current gen iPad mini. I want a refreshed iPad mini with a spec bump. All the latest internals.
Plus, I can only get it from Apple since I have credit that is just sitting unused.
I would prefer to get a quality Android tablet in a similar size, but no one is really making those anymore.

Eh. You can probably find a Samsung S2 8.0 on eBay or even in a Best Buy. Maybe even B&H. $299, if you’re lucky at BB & B&H.
